Reason Over Emotion: The Power of Informed Decisions

On November 10, 2024, James Tawdrous, a data engineer with a background in medical science, conducted a highly engaging session with 27 youth. The focus of his talk was decision-making, a crucial skill that the participants will frequently rely on throughout their lives. This topic resonated deeply with the group, emphasizing the importance of making informed and rational choices.

At the beginning of the session, James divided the youth into three groups and presented them with three items to choose from: a cookie, a chocolate powdered drink, and a pack of candies. Each group enthusiastically selected an item, unaware of its significance. Afterward, James instructed them to build a tower and place their chosen item at the top, ensuring it wouldn’t fall.

This task proved challenging for the group that had chosen the pack of candies—it was too heavy and made balancing the tower difficult. Reflecting on the exercise, James pointed out a key lesson: before making a decision, it is essential to understand its purpose and implications. None of the groups had asked why they were choosing the item or for what purpose, assuming instead that it was meant to be enjoyed or shared.

James emphasized that decisions based solely on appearances or immediate gratification can lead to unexpected difficulties. To make effective decisions, one must gather all relevant information, weigh the pros and cons, and seek advice from trusted individuals or those knowledgeable about the subject. He further stressed the importance of reasoning over emotions, urging the youth to approach decisions thoughtfully and with a clear mind.

This session left a lasting impression, equipping the participants with practical tools for making wiser choices in their lives.
