Mastering Communication: Unlocking the Power of Effective Dialogue
On November 13, 2024, the Light for All Foundation was invited to speak to the dedicated teachers of Malaya Elementary School on the topic of “Mastering Communication: Unlocking the Power of Effective Dialogue.” This important session was led by our Australian volunteers—Sherry Selim, an Engineer Majoring in Civil and Environmental with 22 years of experience in local government engineering mainly traffic and transport, Monika Tadrous, a High school teacher for 12 years specialising in English, History and English as a second language and Maria Saeed, who has a Bachelor degree in Design in Architecture and then continued to further study her Masters in Primary Education—each of whom has extensive experience in teaching and communication strategies.
The event focused on the vital role of communication, not only in connecting with students but also in fostering positive and collaborative relationships with colleagues. The volunteers led a hands-on workshop where they introduced various methods and strategies to improve communication in both professional and educational settings.
They also had fun and engaging activities like Drawing Game: Enhancing Clarity and Precision in Communication, the objective was to demonstrate how important clear, precise communication is when one sense—like sight—is removed. Teachers experienced firsthand the challenges of conveying complex ideas without the usual visual cues and discovered the impact of clear verbal instructions in ensuring mutual understanding. They also played Communication Style Comparison: Effective vs. Ineffective Communication wherein the teachers practiced either effective communication (active listening, eye contact) or ineffective communication (distraction, disengagement). The group using effective communication felt valued, while the other felt frustrated and disconnected. The exercise highlighted the impact of active listening and non-verbal cues on communication. This exercise highlighted how small actions, like paying attention or maintaining eye contact, can profoundly impact how we feel during interactions.
The workshop was an engaging, thought-provoking experience that emphasized the significance of clear, empathetic communication in creating a supportive and productive environment. The 19 teachers left the session equipped with actionable strategies to enhance their daily interactions, ultimately contributing to a more positive and effective teaching atmosphere at Malaya Elementary School.
